Gendarmstien

The Gendarme Path

The Gendarme Path (Gendarmstien) is a hiking trail stretching from Padborg at the Danish-German border to Høruphav on the island of Als, covering a marked distance of 84 kilometers. The trail passes through Kruså, Kollund, Sønderhav, Sandager, Egernsund, Rendbjerg, Brunsnæs, Kragesand, Stensigmose, Sønderborg, Høruphav, and ends in Skovby.

The Gendarme Path was re-established in the 1980s by Sønderjyllands County in collaboration with the then-existing municipalities. It is now maintained by Aabenraa and Sønderborg municipalities. The final 10 kilometers from Høruphav to Skovby were added in 2016.

For easier navigation, the tourist organization has divided the Gendarme Path into five sections, each intended as a one-day hiking stage and named after a characteristic feature:

  1. Mountain Stage (Bjerg-etapen) – Padborg to Sønderhav (15 km)
  2. Brick Stage (Tegl-etapen) – Sønderhav to Brunsnæs (20 km)
  3. Crow Stage (Krage-etapen) – Brunsnæs to Gammelmark (19 km)
  4. Beach Stage (Strand-etapen) – Gammelmark to Høruphav (19 km)
  5. Mill Stage (Mølle-etapen) – Høruphav to Skovby (10 km)
